The Old Now by, Dr. Yassin El-Ayouty, Esq

Your recent issue carried an evocative article by President Kate Foster. Evocative because it reminded me of the great spirit of the late College's president , Roscow West . He greeted me very warmly when I was introduced to him by the late Dr. Bill Hausdoerffer . That was when I arrived at the then " The New Jersey Teachers College at Trenton "  . The date was September , 17 , 1952 . On September 16 of that year , I had arrived in the US from Egypt as a Fulbright . Upon arrival at Bliss Hall , Bill and Rosemarie Hausdoerffer greeted me at their apartment at that dorm with a glass of milk . 

  The following day , I was led to " The Commons " for breakfast --a feast . Food was included in the pay for College from which I was exempt . Moving in line to be served from that extensive bar , I noticed that the student ahead of me has over-ordered . His tray carried a large assortment of food . Curious by nature , I followed him to discern his consumption . He ate only a small portion , leaving what was left on his tray to be dumped as waste . 

  But coming from Egypt , where food is not plentiful , I was literally amazed at that wasteful scene . However , having taught primary school in Cairo before  coming to NJ , I had learnt to translate my significant observations into writings . Thus , in 1999 , as a writer for Forbes Magazine at that time , I contributed an article on American food production . It was chosen for a cover story , whose inspiration came from TCNJ . 

  With inspirations being a gateway to other modes , I found that TCNJ had led me to the UN . That is where I served for 32 years , and also became an attorney and professor of law . Thanks TCNJ for having been a locomotive of a rewarding career.
